When a diagnosis of a bone infection is reached, the subsequent treatment depends on how the bone infection has spread to the bone. A bone infection like osteomyelitis may spread through the blood, from the surrounding soft tissue, through an artificial joint, or via an ulcer, such as the foot
ulcers that occur in people with diabetes.
In most cases, treatment includes a high dosage of antibiotics. In more severe cases, surgery or intravenous medication may also be needed.
As with any treatment plan that includes a medication, you must follow exactly to the directions for your bone infection medication.
